PQQ is an antioxidant and based on recent research, it shows to be more powerful at fighting free radicals than vitamin C - this directly impacts and lowers inflammation and stress in our body.
A small, 8-week study in 17 people found that taking 20 mg of PQQ daily resulted in significant self-reported improvements in sleep quality and fatigue. This is thought to be mainly due to its effect on normalizing cortisol levels.
While there can be many reasons as to why one struggle with getting good rest, these days I find that a majority of clients’ sleep issues are related to imbalances in cortisol output (which can be clinically tested in a hormone and stress test - I run these tests at the clinic).
Stress is particularly difficult to treat because there can be so many reasons as to why we are stressed out - both biochemically and psychologically. Not to mention how EMFs from our smartgadgets, smartphones and wifi impact our nervous system.
So while a successful treatment needs to address all the factors that can result in an imbalanced cortisol output, if we are to get our sleep back, supplements like PQQ that help normalize cortisol output, can be an important tool in our toolkit in the interrim.
However, there are not magic pills when it comes to sleep and stress.
Stress and sleep disorders are signs of our nervous system being under attack for way too long, and thus we must address the things in our life at every level that is draining us - people, environmental toxins, nutrient deficiencies, hormone decline as we age, work issues etc.
