While it may seem contradictory, clinical research suggests that is helps to minimize the damaging side effects on your gut microbiome, if you take certain probiotics together with antibiotics.
To grain or not to grain?
That seems to be the main question on most people’s mind these days. Personally I always recommend taking advice on matters from professionals who are educated in the field you seek advice in, i.e. seek nutrition advice from professionals who are educated and hold a degree in nutrition science and seek medical advice and diagnostics from professionals who have a medical training. If we did that, and if we as professionals respected different educational backgrounds and trainings, instead of thinking “we know it all”, it would lead to a lot less confusion and malpractice in the health arena.
Anyway, today I want to share this video on the subject of grains with two very different takes on the matter - Dr. Perlmutter, a Medical Doctor and author of “Grain Brain” and Dr. John Douillard, DC, CAP a globally recognized leader in the fields of natural health, Ayurveda, and sports medicine. I find it incredibly nice that these two personalities in their own right are able to discuss their different takes on this almost religious matter in such a civil manner.

Dr. Kurt Woeller D. O. is one of the pioneers in understanding biochemical abnormalities related to autism and neurological issues. I highly recommend working with him if you or anyone you know struggles with autism - his knowledge is unsurpassed.
His detailed biochemical understanding of health and disease is truly unique and I’ve followed his work for the last decade along with - unbeknownst to him - I happened to take a training course in organic acid testing led by Dr. Woeller approx a decade ago.
Today I had the pleasure of being on his newly released podcast “Doc Talks”. He is truly one of a select handfuld of incredibly knowledgable practitioners, I have been lucky enough to either be mentored by or work directly with - i.e. Dr. Eric Braverman MD, Dr. Deepak Chopra MD, Dr. Rau MD, Dr. Greg Melvin (who I also collaborate currently with on analysing my clients’ thermography scans) and Dr. Woeller D.O.

Read MoreCan you have too low homocysteine?
We mostly know homocysteine as something we have to worry about not getting too high. And that is absolutely true: too high homocysteine is directly related to higher mortality and risk of cardiovascular disease.
But can homocysteine also become too low?
It turns out that the answer is yes: low homocysteine levels are actually linked to increased disease risk. For example, low homocysteine has been shown to have a strong association with peripheral neuropathy.
Research shows that a surprising 41% of patients with idiopathic peripheral neuropathy have hypohomocysteinemia (too low homocysteine). And sulfur is absolutely essential for healthy homocysteine levels. There can be several reasons for imbalances with sulfur in the body - e.g. mold can affect sulfur and thereby homocystein levels. Unfortunately, it is not always as simple as just doing a mineral test for sulfur and thereafter concluding when levels are found low to simply eat foods higher in sulfur to provide the building blocks in order to normalize homocysteine levels (aka broccoli, cabbage, meat).
However, mineral, vitamin and heavy metal tests are always one of the first things I do on all clients who come in for a health check-up, because this is basic information we need to know before we can dig deeper
Vitamin, mineral and metal test incl. 30 minutes review can be booked as a separate service on the website and is also included in all health check-ups.
Read MoreGlyphosate found in high levels in almost everyone
Many of us turn to clean skin care products - it has almost become a gimmick at this point in time. Especially as many of the so-called clean beauty products do nothing good for the skin - they don’t contain actually skin benefitting ingredients, but can get a label touting “clean” simply by avoiding the main allergy-triggers.
Although it is a good idea to focus on the health-damaging chemicals around us, it is even more important that we understand how to prioritize our efforts to not get overwhelmed with insignificant details. I.e. it doesn’t matter if a little perfume has been added to a soap (unless we are hyper allergic), but it does matter how clean our drinking and bathing water is and whether we cook and store food in contact with plastic (heat/ acid effect primarily). It is most often from such boring everyday sources that the majority of the chemicals we get back on the lab tests done on clients are derived from. Chemicals related to increased disease risk incl. cancer.

It’s not new knowledge, but it is still one of the more frequent mistakes I see done: taking vitamin D mixed with other minerals such as with calcium.
Fact is, when you mix vitamin D with minerals it gets degraded rapidly - which is why you should always take vitamin D isolated in its own supplement, if you want to actually absorb what you are taking.

“As a woman, you have unique nutritional needs when compared to men. And in a perfect world, you’d meet all those requirements through a balanced diet. But in reality, eating healthy isn’t enough.
“A key thing I see a lot of women struggling with is being undernourished–in large part, due to depleted soil which results in our fruit and veggies only containing a fraction of nutrients compared to what they did 50 years ago,” says Christina Santini, clinical nutritionist and owner of The Nutrition Clinic in Los Angeles, CA. “This is easily a recipe for disaster because both our overall health and hormones along with our appetite control center is tightly regulated by how nutrient dense our diet is.”
So even if you eat a wholesome, balanced diet, proper supplementation is key–especially during the winter. Here are the best women’s supplements to keep you healthy and vital all season long–and for years to come.”

Read MoreWhat to do about PFAS?
PFAS is a component of non-stick cookware made with Teflon, microwave popcorn, and is found in a variety of medications: anesthetics, nerve agents, antibiotics, antidepressants, antifungals, antihistamines, cholesterol-lowering medications, anti-malarials, chemotherapy, arthritis medications, psychotropics, and steroids. Of course, you should not stop taking vital medication for that reason, but it is important to know about the possible side effects. Possibly the most overlooked source in our immediate environment is our drinking and shower water.
Read MoreYou are only as healthy as the home you are living in! Hint: Are you sick and moldy?
I’ve been treating mold illness as one of the first practitioners in Europe since 2012. To this day it still surprises me how deeply unhealthy homes many of us live in, yet we are hyper focused on our eating habits. However, it doesn’t matter however healthy you eat, if you are literally inhaling toxins with every breath you take.
We need to master the basics of clean air, pure water supply and solid sleep in order to expect any miracles happening our way. These are basics we cannot eat our way out of nor exercise our way out of.
Some of us need to relax and eat a slice of cake and focus on what is really making us sick - which may have nothing to do with what we eat (or don’t eat).
This is why it is a good idea to get checked out, so we are not stuck guessing what is wrong with us and trying every new diet fad under the sun to no avail.

Read MoreEMF exposure (from your phone + wifi) linked to bad gut bacteria + antibiotic resistance
Study shows that exposure to EMF slows growth of beneficial bacteria. This results in that pathological organisms can dominate. In the study they used kombucha to compensate for this mechanism, which showed good results. Nevertheless it is extremely worrying that our gut microbiome is impacted by EMF. Approaches to balance intestinal flora for those of us struggling with EHS or other chronic conditions possibly linked to excessive EMF exposure is needed in addition to most importantly minimizing exposure. Another study showed that certain types of pathogenic gut bacteria gained resistance to antibiotics when exposed to EMFs emitted from WiFi and cellular phones. This can become a problem because as these bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, they become more difficult to eradicate from our gut if we have an overgrowth.
Read MoreEnvironmental toxins linked to Parkinson's (more than genes)
There has been more and more research supporting the notion that Parkinson’s is not just malfunctioning genes, but rather exposure to heavy load of environmental toxins. Detox is essential for the body to rid itself of environmental toxins and prevent genetic determination from becoming genetic destiny. However, cellular detox needs to be done before permanent DNA damage has occurred (stage 4 Parkinson’s) - early detection is of utmost important if we want to avoid disease becoming a chronic factor in our life later on.

Read MoreBad science: Grains and beans are not "bad foods"
Recently I read yet another post from one of the more famous health and nutrition influencers claiming that bread and beans are “inflammatory” and should be avoided by all who wants health. This is one of the most stubborn health myths around, as everyone and their grandma has gone glutenfree these days. And unfortunately many self-claimed health gurus keep pushing this bad science. The majority of the people pushing this have zero education in nutrition, and it shows. They may be great medical doctors, good chiropractors or just savvy businessmen, who now make a living off selling health gadgets after their own history of burn-out. However, this does not make their insight into nutritional biochemistry great - just like I shouldn’t go around offering surgery on everyone and sundry just cause I saw a youtube video about it. That would be pretty crazy, frankly. And I also think it is pretty crazy for everyone to wake up and write books and blogs about nutrition with zero educational background or in-clinic training. There are a lot of issues with this type of bad science being promoted.
Read MoreToxic and obesogenic BPA most common route is from receipts NOT food!
“A study published July 11 by Swiss scientists found that BPA transfers readily from receipts to skin and can penetrate the skin to such a depth that it cannot be washed off (Biedermann 2010). This raises the possibility that the chemical infiltrates the skin's lower layers to enter the bloodstream directly. BPA has also been shown to penetrate skin in laboratory studies (Kaddar 2008). EWG collected 36 receipts and commissioned the University of Missouri Division of Biological Sciences laboratory to investigate their BPA content. This laboratory is considered one of the world's foremost research facilities in its capability to detect environmentally relevant BPA concentrations. The Missouri scientists found that the total mass of BPA on a receipt is 250 to 1,000 times greater than the amount of BPA typically found in a can of food or a can of baby formula, or that which leaches from a BPA-based plastic baby bottle into its contents. These data should not be interpreted to suggest that policymakers shift their focus from BPA contamination of food, which is widespread, to receipts. BPA exposure from food sources is ubiquitous and should remain the first priority of U.S. policymakers. However, a significant portion of the public may also be exposed to BPA by handling receipts. Since many retailers do not use BPA-laden thermal paper, this particular route of exposure is easy to correct.” Read the full report on Environmental Working Group site here: https://www.ewg.org/research/bpa-in-store-receipts
