Superfoods are the way to go if you want to provide yourself with a broad spectrum of nutrients that will cater for your every health need, bite by bite. They are usually higher in nutrients than your standard synthetic supplement and the bioavailability is unsurpassed.
If you are not already eating these 5 superfoods, consider adding in a couple on a daily basis as a health insurance. This is the closest we get to a "magic pill".
CHIA
This little super seed is truly amazing in its ability to bind toxins and valuable in any detox program - I like adding it to oatmeal, sprinkle on smoothies, or use on top of open-faced avocado sandwiches for a crunchy bite! And by the way, did you know that avocados are one of the best ways to get potassium? A key nutrient involved in blood sugar regulation and blood pressure. You can read more about avocados and their anti-diabetic properties here.
BLACK GARLIC
Fermentation gives this garlic a sweet almost caramel flavor and concentrates its natural antioxidants to nearly double that of a raw bulb. Garlic is one of nature's go-to-remedies for anti-fungal, anti-bacterial + anti-viral purposes. There is not an ailment where garlic does not show benefits. However, if you suffer from damage of the stomach/gut lining you do need to consume in moderation. As always, keep in mind special nutritional needs for special health concerns.
NUTRITIONAL YEAST
This is an amazing vegan and deliciously nutritious alternative to adding some parmesan to your foods. It is a highly bioavailable source of B-vitamins which most of us are deficient in due to stress. Also do keep in mind, that if you are taking any type of prescription drugs or anti-depressants, your need for B-vitamins sky-rockets, because these types of chemicals deplete B-vitamins in your body. B-vitamins are critical as their role in stabilizing the central nervous system incl. mood disorders. I use a tbsp. or two over buckwheat pasta, buttered roasted potatoes, or stir-fried vegetables... super yummy!
JICAMA
Super crunchy with a slight sweetness to it, this veggie contains inulin, a substance known to activate belly-fat, great for any fat-burning program and also shown to have blood sugar regulating benefits for diabetes type 2. Inulin acts as a prebiotic to promote helpful bacteria in the gut. Also a great source of vitamin C - one of the key nutrients for collagen + wrinkle reduction.
KEFIR
A watery version of yogurt, but easier to digest. A great beverage to consume if digestive disorder is your core concern, as it is relatively low in casein, which can be an issue for some with consuming yogurt. However, if you are hypersensitive and on a strict no-dairy diet, you will not be able to tolerate kefir either, as it does contain a bit casein. For most of us, this is an easy to digest gut-friendly superfood. Just a cup of kefir contains typically 100 x or more of gut-friendly bacteria than your average probiotic supplement - and MUCH cheaper!
